The paper deals with the main features of the information system aimed at providing predictions of the level of fulfillment of economic plans, this system being set within the framework of the socialist planned economy. Such predictive system should provide planners and economic managers with sufficiently accurate predictions referring to all the relevant economic variables and to all levels of the economy If such predictions are to be practically useful, howeve1, the system must obey some requirements which are broadly dealt with in the paper. Special attention is devoted to the following problems:1. The problem of adequate prediction lead. 2. The field of possible uses of prediction data for management and control of the economy. 3. The optimum frequency of building new predictions. 4. Comparability and consistency of different predictions. 5. Admissible predictions and statistical measures of the accuracy of prediction when forthcoming predictions are used for making new drcisions. Special emphasis is laid on problems of short-run prediction, i.e. prediction with prediction lead not exceeding one year.
