Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis
Histological diagnosis: Encephalomalacia rubra. Autopsy examination of 66-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with H-E, PAS and Van Gieson's method.A focus of hemorrhagic necrosis was found in the right superior frontal ganglion. The white matter, of poorer staining, was loosened, locally spongy in character, with single macrophages, circular and slit hemorrhages in places. The preserved nerve cells were either fatty degenerated or with features of ischemic disease. PAS positive material was found in stimulated astroglia, fatty degenerated nerve cells, leukocytes and vitrified vessels. Features of edema and congestion were seen throughout the nervous system. There were minor atherosclerotic changes in the vessels. In some sections blood was present in the subarachnoid space.
