Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis
Histological diagnosis: Encephalomacia bilateralis loborum occipita.Autopsy examination of 72-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin, cresyl-violet and van Gieson method.Foci of malacia were found in both occipital lobes. One involved mainly the cortex, to a lower extent the white matter. In the opposite hemisphere, the injury involved mainly white matter near the posterior horn of the ventricle. The white matter in both foci was in the same period of degradation. Macrophage dissection was evident in the cortex, and scavenger cells were scattered among the disintegrated fragments of neural parenchyma.
