There is a clear need for research on the inner “life” of such a structure, which at that time \(1864–1914\) was very dynamic. As there was virtually no private service companies and not enough public service of hostile Russian authorities, the needs of a single tenement house \(a large structure giving shelter to up to a few hundred people\) had to be satisfied by many private door\-to\-door servicemen and numerous domestic servants. Although people of different classes met in such a house, there was almost no social integration of the better\-off tenants.
