Rock Atlas

The collection presents siliceous rocks from resources of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, systematically collected by researchers at the Unit for Prehistoric Flint Mining (now the Unit for Prehistoric Flint Mining of the Department of Interdisciplinary Archaeological Research IAE PAS).
The Atlas of Rocks is a tool addressed to researchers of prehistoric communities for the identification of the raw materials of lithic tools and weapons in prehistory. Good identification of rock materials helps in research on the mobility of prehistoric communities and the reconstruction of their economy. The Atlas of lithic raw materials ensures the presentation of specimens in a consistent way by describing them by type. All specimens are described with dedicated metadata on the characteristic features of the described object.
