Abstract:

The blood ammonia level was estimated in 40 patients with massive hemorrhage from the upper gastrointestinal tract, in order to ascertain the source of bleeding: they are the varices of the esophages and the gastric or duodenal ulcer. The normal blood ammonia in the control group on the normal diet amounted to 47,7cp°/o, on the non-protein diet it was 4O,2cp°/o. In the first group concerning 10 patients with bleeding from esophageal varices the NH3 level amounted to an average of 94,0qp°/o. There was however one patient with hemorrhage from varices of the esophagus and hepatic coma whose ammonia level was normal. In the second group of 30 patients with bleeding gastric or duodenal ulcer the ammonia level amounted to an average of 51,5cp°/o.
