Abstract:

The article is an attempt at a statistical analysis of the émigré press from the years 1865–1918. The presented data was calculated based on a list of magazines included in Bibliografi a historii Polski XIX i XX wieku [The Bibliography of Polish History in 19th and 20th centuries], vol. 3: 1865–1918, part 4: Czasopisma, jednodniówki i kalendarze. Emigracja i Polonia [Periodicals, pamphlets and calendars. Polish émigrés and diaspora]. According to Bibliografi a in the years 1865–1918 there were published a total of 742 Polish diaspora press titles, of which 321 were unfound titles. Among the mentioned 742 magazines, 545 (including 19 in a foreign language) were issued in North America, 164 (including 44 in a foreign language) in Europe, 30 in South America, 2 in Africa, and 1 in Asia. Large publishing houses were formed in the biggest agglom erations of Polish diaspora. In North America, it was Chicago (138 press titles); in Europe, Paris (56); and in South America, Curitiba (28). Th e increase of the published press titles coincides with the next waves of Poles emigrating from the Polish lands.
