Abstrakt:

The eleventh volume of the new Memorabilia Zoologica series presents the results of queries concerning historical invertebrate animal specimens held at the Museum and Institute of Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The search and analysis process covered museum and archival collections dating from 1818 to 1919. The specimens were acquired from the founding of the Zoological Cabinet of the Royal University of Warsaw in 1818 until its transformation into the Zoological Museum of the University of Warsaw in 1917. In 1919, the so-called scientific part of the University’s collection was placed under the care of the State Zoological Museum (now the Museum and Institute of Zoology PAS). During the period under consideration, both the documentation—such as inventories— and the University’s collections were significantly diminished. This process began with the takeover of the Zoological Cabinet of the Imperial University of Warsaw by Russian scholars in 1890 and continued until the Russians left Warsaw in 1915. In the subsequent years, from 1915 to 1919, the structure and organization of the collections changed due to the repolonization of the University, the transformation of the Cabinet into a Museum, and the separation of the collections into two parts: the so-called didactic and the aforementioned scientific collections. The study of the provenance of the collections and the deepening of knowledge about the history of the university’s Zoological Cabinet, as well as the individuals associated with it, became possible thanks to numerous queries conducted in archives and museums in Germany, Austria, France, the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, and Peru. As a result, for the first time, researchers were able to consolidate information about specimens originating from the Cabinet, which are now housed in various Polish and foreign institutions. This volume presents data on over 20 000 specimens representing approximately 2 500 species currently held at the Museum and Institute of Zoology PAS. The study focuses on invertebrate specimens from various regions of the world, acquired during scientific expeditions and hunting trips, as well as through exchanges, donations, or purchases. The results of the queries conducted as part of the project “Rekonstrukcja i opracowanie zbiorów naukowych Gabinetu Zoologicznego Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego. Od XVIII-wiecznego Musaeum Polonicum do Narodowego Muzeum Przyrodniczego [Reconstruction and Development of the Scientific Collections of the Zoological Cabinet of the University of Warsaw: From the 18th-Century Musaeum Polonicum to the National Museum of Natural History]” have also been made available online. To facilitate access to the information, the lists of specimens from the Zoological Cabinet discussed in this volume are available in the form of searchable databases.
