Abstract:

The protective effect of Nimotop (Bayer) — a calcium channel blocker, beingan equivalent of nimodipine, on the development of selective damage of CAi neuronsof Ammon’s horn resulting from short-term ischemia of forebrain in Mongoliangerbils was evaluated. The experimental animals, subjected to 7.5 min bilateralligation of common carotid arteries were given the drug in a dosis of 1 mg/kgbody weight in the form of intraperitoneal injection at various periods in relationto cerebral ischemia. In group 1 — Nimotop was administered twice — 60 mjnbefore ischemia and 5 h after arterial release. In group 2 a double dosis of thedrug was given 15 min prior to carotid occlusion and in 3rd hour of the recirculation. In group 3 the scheme applied in group 2 was supplemented with a thirddosis of Nimotop given 24 h following cerebral ischemia. The latter was the timeof a single drug dosis application in group 4. The control animals were subjectedto cerebral ischemia with no medication.
