Abstract:

The article shed light on the subject of emigration from Poland in the 1980s, focusing on one of its aspects – an instrumental attitude of a selected group of emigrants. The title “emigrants from hopelessness” are young people who decided to leave their country not because of political reasons or under the influence of a trend to “earn some money on the side”, but with the intention to have a better, more prosperous and more interesting professional life. In their motives, experiences and significances they attribute to their leaving of the country they resemble highly qualified emigrants travelling throughout the world to develop their professional careers. The article is based on contemporary interviews with representatives of the emigration of that period.
