Muscle segment examination in light & electon microscopy

Abstract:

A 7-year-old patinet with limb-gridle muscular dystrophy was examined. A biopsy of quadriceps sinister was performed. Electronmicroscopy analysis of the biopsy revealed some fibers of the correct diameter, preserved myofbrils structure and typical, located under the sarcolemma nuclei. In some fibers fat droplets were seen. Significantly damaged, swollen mitochondria characterized by loss of mitochondrial cristae were observed. Except fibers of the correct diameter and preserved myofibrils, small fibers with disurbed sarcomere strucure and centrally located abnormal nuclei were visible. Some of the fibers showed abnormalities and discrupture of the contractile apparatus. The image of changes suggests primary muscular dmage.
