Abstract:

This article describes the four most famous patriotic funerals that passed through the streets of Warsaw in the nineteenth century. The author emphasises the specificity of these ceremonies under the then-contemporary circumstances in Polish lands. An important element is the observation that despite the fact that the funerals were of a political nature, it was not until the second half of the century that they took on an oppositional and confrontational character against partitioning by Russia. Through a detailed reconstruction of these funeral ceremonies, the author pays special attention to the important role played by the city space of Warsaw for the funerals. The route of the funeral processions, the liturgies celebrated, and also the burial places triggered emotions that made national relics of fragments of funeral objects (shrouds, wreaths, etc.). They became an obligatory part of the decor in the formal spaces in the home (living room, library, etc.), while participation in such occasions was placed among the “duties” of the people without the state’s involvement. The ceremonies themselves created a symbolic community space for the inhabitants of the city and country.
