Kras, Paweł : Redaktor ; Nodl, Martin : Redaktor
s. 53-70 ; Materiały z konferencji odbytej 6-7 listopada 2015 r. w Warszawie ; Pamięci Profesora Stanisława Byliny (1936-2017) ; Streszczenie w języku angielskim.
This article discusses various approaches to the study of Jan Hus starting from his trial at the council of Constance to the present day. Hus has occupied a central role in Czech historiography as the founder of the Hussite movement and as a symbol of Czech identity. For his followers in the fifteenth century, and later for the advocates of the Reformation, Hus was a hero, a courageous Church reformer and an uncompromised critic of the clergy’s abuses. The author argues that Hus’s activities should be contextualized and presented against a wide panorama of historical developments of the late fourteenth and early fifteenth century. Alongside a biographical overview of his life, teaching and the conflict with ecclesiastical authorities, the article confronts the current knowledge with various preconceptions and biases that have made a strong impact on the perception of Hus. The author draws a nuanced portrait of Jan Hus – priest, preacher, scholar and reformer – who on the one hand was accused of heresy, put on trial and condemned, but on the other was turned into a leader of the Bohemian Reformation and a propagator of the Czech national interests. The assessment of Hus used to depend on various confessional, political and ideological interpretations. The author argues that only a careful and unbiased analysis of all available sources, published and unpublished, makes it possible to get close to the historical Hus and to learn about his life, activities and doctrine.
