Jan Hus on marriage and family ; Jan Hus : życie, myśl, dziedzictwo
Kras, Paweł : Editor ; Nodl, Martin : Editor
p. 219-235 ; Papers delivered at a conference held in honor of Stanisław Bylina, November 6-7, 2015 in Warsaw, at the Instytut Historii (Polska Akademia Nauk). ; Summary in English.
In his sermons and writings Jan Hus devoted much attention to Christian marriage discussing such problems as a broken promise of marriage, infidelity, abandonment, and the refusal to fulfil marital obligations. Hus emphasizes the role of love and fidelity, and at the same time criticizes divorces, marriage for money, and marriage between partners of unequal age. Appreciating virginity he praises sacramental marriage as a union of man and woman based on love and fidelity that allows people to live together and raise children in accordance with God’s commandments. In family relations Hus commands the absolute obedience of children to parents, except when a son or daughter decides to serve God. It is worth stressing that Hus favoured raising children in the Czech language, their mother tongue.
