Abstract:

In the post-war period a strong centre of Polish studies on Hussitism was established at the University of Wrocław. Roman Heck was one of its apprentices and active members. In Polish historiography he pioneered new research on the Hussite movement and his studies offer a multifaceted approach to various problems of Hussite studies. Despite the fact that his first works were much influenced by Marxist ideology, in his later studies Heck demonstrated profound expertise. In his research on the Hussite period Heck dealt with a variety of topics. For him Hussitism was not limited only to the Hussite revolution, but also included the reign of King George of Poděbrad. Heck was much interested in Polish-Bohemian relations in the second half of the fifteenth century; he studied the concept of a Slavic commonwealth, the growth of historical awareness in Bohemia and Poland, and the development of national identities in the two neighbouring countries. A separate domain of his study was focused on Hussite influences in Silesia, which he initially overestimated. For different reasons a number of Heck’s works are out of date, but his detailed findings still constitute important contributions to modern scholarship.
