Abstract:

Contemporary religiosity is very strongly influenced by popular culture; the religious canon and the apocrypha that complement it also bear this culture's mark. In her article, the author discusses contemporary ways of understanding these notions. She traces the transformations within the canon on the example of the perception of the Passion Plays, as well as the reception of, and discussion on such media phenomena as the "discovery" of the Gospel of Judas or the premieres of Dan Brown's novel The Da Vinci Code and the film The Passion of the Christ directed by Mel Gibson. The text is also a description of an element of contemporary Polish religiosity. The author demonstrates that not only holy texts, but also a "secular" film may become an object of faith
