Abstract:

In 1986 Studio of Archeology and Conservatory Works PP PKZ in Szczecin (Stettin) initiated archeological examination of Stettin's Old Town (Podzamcze). In 1995 during the excavation a wooden figure - statuette was encountered at the excavation site no. VI (fig. 1). It was found to the North of the building no. 140 in a place where — on this level an unoccupied square used to be (fig. 2). References in written sources as well as stylistic similarity to idols found beforehand enable us to classify the figure as an object associated with religious rites. The level of the settlement where the figure was found indicates that the object comes from the 11th century but only further interpretation can determine to what extent the statuette is a proof of surviving pagan rites in times of expansion of christian religion in the area of western Slavland
