Abstract:

The article contains a discussion of the more important studies concerned withchemical analysis of sediments, and classification of sediments and lakes on thisbasis. Particular attention has been paid to the problem of the contents and composition of organic matter in bottom sediments and its energy value in differenthabitats, and its origin in the sediments discussed. A review is given of studiesdealing with mineralization process in bottom sediments , emphasising the importantrole of oxygen in these process. In conclusion some methodical aspects of investigationsof oxygen consumption by sediments are discussed. Attention is drawn tothe lack of studies on processes taking place in bottom sediments and to the insignificant number of elaborations of this type of field experiment carried out under natural conditions.
