Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Haemorrhagia subarachnoidealis. Oedema cerebri. Senilitas. Autopsy examination of 73-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with cresyl-violet, orcein, Holzer, Bielschowsky, Heidenhain, Perdrau and Van Gieson's method.Fresh extravasated blood was found in the subarachnoid space. Meningeal vessels and other vessels of the brain were filled with blood. Spongiosis and diffuse cellular vacuolation were observed in the cortex, with chronic disease in the preserved neurons.Significant thinning of the cerebellar granular layer as well as segmental atrophy and hemogenization of Purkinje cells were evident. In silver staining, the cortex of all areas and layers was dotted with very numerous senile lesions. The white matter showed edematous dissection of fiber bundles and perivascular sinuses in some areas. The vessel walls did not show atherosclerotic changes, but were rather thinned and atrophic..
