Abstract:

In this article, we propose a set of indicators for assessing the capacity of vegetation to mitigate anthropogenic nuisances at the local scale, corresponding to the level of local spatial planning. The methodology combines a general indicator – the mean Leaf Area Index (LAI) within a 60-m buffer around the facility – with three detailed indicators derived from airborne laser scanning (ALS) data: (1) mean vegetation volume per unit area of the buffer, (2) mean maximum vegetation height, and share of the buffer length exceeding specific vegetation-height thresholds (1, 2, 5, 10 m). We test indicators at two major technical infrastructure sites in Warsaw, Poland: the “Czajka” wastewater treatment plant and the “Żerań” coal-fired power plant. The results show a markedly higher buffering potential of vegetation around “Czajka” (mean LAI: 1.79 in summer and 0.30 in winter; mean vegetation volume: 4.06 m³·m⁻²; mean height: 17.62 m) compared to Żerań (1.28; 0.23; 1.70 m³·m⁻²; 11.55 m). The proposed indicators allow for comparative assessment of green buffers, identification of insufficiently screened segments, and formulation of minimum vegetation standards in local plans. We discuss methodological limitations (LAI seasonality, timing of ALS data acquisition) and outline the potential for calibration against field measurements of noise, odor, and visual obstruction. The BUFOR1–BUFOR2 indicator set provides an operational, data-driven tool to support the design and monitoring of urban green infrastructure.
